Billings Completes Bypass Phases, Expands Airport Parkway With Federal Funds

The Billings Bypass remains partially complete as of 2026, with the Yellowstone River Bridge, Five Mile Road, and Railroad Overpass segments open to traffic. The Johnson Lane Interchange construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in late 2026, with full completion expected in 2027.

Billings Bypass Status

Multiple segments of the Billings Bypass have opened while the remaining phases continue under the Montana Department of Transportation. The project focuses on improving connectivity across the region, with current open portions already handling local traffic flows. Residents near the Yellowstone River and Five Mile Road areas have access to the completed sections.

Airport Area Funding and Improvements

Billings received an $11.6 million federal BUILD grant to complete the Northwest Billings Connector and Marathon Loop. This funding creates nearly 25 miles of continuous parkways near Billings Logan International Airport. A separate $1.5 million stormwater improvement project for Pond E at the airport addresses runoff from new commercial aeronautical areas through federal appropriations.

Water Treatment and Hospital Construction

Construction began in 2025 on the new West End Water Treatment Plant, which will include two reservoirs fed by the Billings Bench Water Association Canal. Layton Construction broke ground in June 2025 on the new St. Vincent Regional Hospital, a project set to open in 2029. These efforts add to the city's infrastructure pipeline alongside the airport and bypass work.

Upcoming Phases

Further construction on the Johnson Lane Interchange portion of the Billings Bypass is expected to start late in 2026. The airport parkway segments funded by the BUILD grant continue toward completion to link additional areas around Billings Logan International Airport.
