Billings Expands Free Senior Fitness Programs at Multiple City Sites
Billings Parks and Recreation has expanded its no-cost group exercise options for residents 60 and older at multiple city sites this summer.
How we reported this
Billings Parks and Recreation began offering free senior fitness classes on July 1 at two city facilities, with sessions running through the end of August. The council approved the expansion last month to cover instructor pay and equipment without charging participants.
Billings has seen its share of residents over 60 rise steadily since 2020, and city staff say the free programs address gaps in access for those on fixed incomes who skip paid gym memberships. Local data from the 2025 community health survey showed 38 percent of seniors reported no regular physical activity outside the home.
Where classes are held
Classes take place at the Billings Recreation Center on 27th Street West and at the Heights Community Center near Main Street. Tuesday and Thursday mornings feature chair yoga led by certified instructors at the Recreation Center, while Monday and Wednesday afternoons offer balance and walking drills at the Heights site using the adjacent paved trail. Both locations provide mats and resistance bands at no charge.
Attendance records show 287 unique seniors registered for the first week of July, up from 142 in the same period last year. The city set aside $48,000 from its general wellness fund to run 48 total sessions through Labor Day.
How to sign up
Residents can register at either center during regular business hours or call the Parks and Recreation main line at 406-657-8371. Walk-ins are accepted for most classes, though advance sign-up helps staff adjust group sizes. City staff recommend checking the weekly schedule posted at the front desks before heading out, as weather-related changes sometimes move indoor sessions to the MetraPark lobby when temperatures climb above 90 degrees.
Participants receive a printed calendar at registration listing exact times and any needed items such as comfortable shoes. The program ends August 31, after which the council will review participation numbers before deciding on fall continuation.
